This verdant oasis in the centre of Cape Town was established by the Dutch East India Company in 1652 in order to replenish their ships with food and stores on their trips along the Spice Routes. It is now a beautiful Victorian-style “pleasure garden”, with a long, leafy avenue, beds filled with vegetables, scented herbs and antique roses, ponds, water features, and various historical monuments and statues.
